Uma Thurman may be playing a supergirl in her new film, but the actor tells BT that it’s the sex scenes that she loves doing the most
Uma Thurman earned recognition as one of Hollywood’s A-list actors after her performances as the eccentric Mia Wallace in Pulp Fiction, the venomous Poison Ivy in Batman and Robin and as the star kung fu villain in Kill Bill. In her new film she plays a supergirl with emotional problems and dating issues. Excerpts of an interview...
What made you play a scorned superhero who makes life a living hell for her ex?
What made me fall in love with the script? When I heard that Ivan Reitman was the attached director I said, ‘Okay, I’m excited.’ Then I read it and ended up laughing. It’s so opposite of me, and so I thought, ‘This should be fun for me.’
Is Uma a funny girl?
All my career I have been trying to get a job in the comedy business and I just never, ever, got a chance. I love comedies. I need comedies. I live comedies. I’ve been banging on that door trying to beat it down my whole life, practically.
Do you ever crack up seeing yourself on 70mm?
I love the sex scenes. I know that sounds silly, but the super sex just cracks me up.
How important is it to get under the skin of a character?
It can’t wear you, you have to wear it.
Do all actors dream of being a superhero?
Every nerdy high school kid does. I sure did in high school.
You have been in this for 20 years. Does the medium ever tire you?
I’ve always approached work as worker. Whatever it takes - endurance, discipline, practice, repetition and courage - to work it through. I am always willing to pull myself up and try again and never take success for granted.
It’s hard to save the world in high heels?
Well, if you are going to save the world, you should do it in style.
