He’s barely 25, but Shahid Kapoor thinks it’s the right time for him to move out from the safety net of his parents’ home. And so he bought himself a three-bedroom apartment on the 14th floor of Raj Classic (Versova) that he moved into a few months ago.
Elaborating on his reasons for moving out, Shahid says, “I reached a point when I wanted to live on my own and experience life as an individual. I felt that this is the right time for me to do this, so I did.”
Inner space
A source close to Shahid says, “The interior design of his bachelor pad has been done up by both Twinkle Khanna and Kareena. Shahid was very sure of what he wanted, so the apartment has a warm, woody feel to it with earthy tones, lots of whites and candles, stonework and slats instead of curtains.
One unusual aspect is this particular wall in his drawing room. Instead of putting up a painting or a wall hanging, Shahid’s got a French scroll painted on the entire wall in a parchment effect. It’s visually very interesting and is the first thing you notice on entering his home. Apparently, it was Twinkle’s idea.”
The flat was originally a three-bedroom apartment, but Shahid had it converted into one large bedroom area and a den. The source adds, “Shahid wanted a home to come back to, and not a grand, opulent hotel. He wanted a homely atmosphere and that’s what he’s got.”
Even though he’s young, Shahid is far from lonely in his new apartment. “I love my space and I’ve gotten really used to it: just me, my dog Kaizer and my domestic help. I made the decision to move out over a year ago. But I honestly don’t feel alone because dad stays on the floor below, so I’m there for lunch and dinner almost every day,” he says.
But living alone means taking decisions and even doing mundane things like paying the electricity, gas and phone bills. Says Shahid, “That’s something I’ve always wanted to do. I have been earning for myself since I was 16, so I’ve been independent from a very young age. It’s been part of my nature and I like it that way.”
Wedding plans
Shahid’s next release, Sooraj Barjatya’s Vivah, based on arranged marriages, opens next week. As for his own vivah with Kareena, Shahid says, “There is still a lot of time for that. Both Kareena and I are at a very important stage in our careers.
There is a lot of work that Kareena would like to do and I think she’s at the best stage of her career right now. For me, my journey has only just begun. There is a lot that I need to prove to myself and to the industry before I can take on the responsibility of marriage.”
