Love, love-bites, kisses, breaking up, making up — it’s all out there in B-Town. Sure, some actresses still take the ‘We’re just good friends’ line, but most are bindaas when it comes to making their private lives public.

Take Deepika Padukone, whose dalliances with eligible bachelors like Yuvraj Singh or Ranbir Kapoor has made news. Or Sushmita Sen, who’s been open about her relationships with Randeep Hooda, ad-filmmaker Manav Menon, Vikram Bhatt or Bunty Sachdeva. A far cry from the way it used to be. Think Nargis-Sunil Dutt or Dimple Kapadia-Rajesh Khanna and how hush-hush everything had to be.

Even the most adventurous love life doesn’t seem to affect their star status. “Why should it?” asks actress Kim Sharma who had a public falling-out with cricketer Yuvraj Singh. “Talking about your private life is not taboo anymore. People no longer believe that an actress having a boyfriend or a husband needs to retire,” says Kim. Citing the examples of Bipasha Basu, Sushmita Sen, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan and Kareena Kapoor , Kim says personal life imbalances could be a distraction but not a dead end. “These women are open about their relationships, yet are wanted in films. Though my love life was a distraction, it didn’t affect the projects coming in,” she says.

Actress Suchitra Krishnamoorthi sees no need to hide your private life when you’re a public figure. “If it’s for privacy, that’s acceptable, but being an actress is no reason to hide your personal life,” she says. Talking about evolving social norms, Suchitra says, “The place of women in society is different today with lifestyles like live-in relationships being common. Kudos to actresses who are open about their personal lives and still manage excellent careers.”

Director Sanjay Gupta feels people accept actresses’ relationships when they don’t hide them. “People judge their favourites on how open they’re with the public,” he says and adds, “professionalism rules the industry. Private lives of actresses don’t make any difference, especially if they are successful. Actresses who’re in open relationships are all successful.”

Which explains the chart-topping status of Kareena Kapoor, who dropped Shahid Kapoor and took up with Saif Ali Khan, in full public view. And Deepika Padukone, who’s the flavour of the season in Bollywood.
