Be it a big budget movie, a multi-starrer, a big banner or a small time production house - almost every good movie in has successfully managed to mint money in 2006.

The verdict is out. This is the best year that Bollywood has had in a long time. With more than 20 hits, not only actors but filmmakers, distributors, even the audience seems happy.

Entertainment value

With the war against piracy hotting up and new multiplexes coming up, more people have visited cinema halls in 2006.

Trade analyst Taran Adarsh says: "People are going back to cinema halls to watch movies because they are getting value for money. The movie business has gone up by 40 per cent in the past five years. Money is pouring in from all directions. Also a lot of new subjects were touched upon for the first time in 2006."

Real vs Surreal

Bollywood also had its first superhero this year in the form of Krrish. "It is possible to make a larger than life movie in India today. With an appropriate budget and a tight script, we can make movies to take on superman,"says Rakesh Roshan who went laughing all the way to the bank with Krrish.

Wide horizons

In 2006 KANK replaced K3G as the biggest overseas hit. "Overseas is the biggest territory we have today. It's important that we keep coming out with compatible movies,"says Yash Chopra whose production house had Dhoom 2 and Fanna breaking a lot of records in the overseas territory.

Improved production qualities

"When movies work at the box office, it provides confidence to producers to experiment. As new scripts come in, even actors feel charged up and take up roles as a challenge,"says actor Parvin Dabbas whose Khosla Ka Ghosla turned out to be a hit.

Social impact

Bollywood is opening up to experiments, believes filmmaker Sanjay Gadhvi. "Movies like Lage raho Munnabhai and RDB had strong social messages attached to it. At the same time, Dhoom 2 is a kind of movie which the audience watches for pure fun. This is the right time for any director to try out a new subject. The audience has grown mature,"he says.

Small is big

Apart from a lot of hits, many unusual tricks were tried by film-makers. Mallika Sherawat in Pyaar Ke Side Effects came as a surprise. "This year has shown that a good movie always works. A movie like PKSE was successful without a big budget or controversies surrounding it,"says producer Pritish Nandy. "Small budget movies like Vivah and Gangster have made more money than a lot of big budget ventures because the stories were appealing to the audience,"says Adarsh.
