It is a role no Indian actor wanted to play. But then Irrfan Khan took the challenge.

It is commonly known by now that Mira Nair is making a short film on AIDS. The movie, titled ‘The Migration’, features a gay relationship between a married man and a youth. Mira had earlier finalized Saif Ali Khan to play a villager and Shiney Ahuja to play the gay character.

But Shiney did not want to play a gay man. So when Saif opted out of the project, Shiney happily stepped into Saif’s role, thereby vacating the slot for the gay character.

Mira then approached actor Randeep Hooda for this role. But Randeep refused to play the part.

It was then Irrfan Khan, who plays one of the leading roles in Nair’s latest movie The Namesake came to Nair’s rescue. Irrfan agreed to play the part of a gay man.

Mira is pretty impressed with Irrfan’s professionalism and his desire to take on challenging roles.

‘The Migration’ is being described as a love story between two men. It will be just a 12-minute movie aimed at spreading AIDS awareness. Plans are afoot to tie up with big production houses to screen the film before forthcoming Bollywood movies in theatres.
