She made her name in Tamil films. But can Asin Thottumkal conquer the Hindi movie scene?

TAMIL cinema's hottest star, Asin Thottumkal, is moving to Bollywood.

The Times of India reported that the 23-year-old actress has moved from Chennai - the capital of Tamil Nadu - into a new flat in Mumbai.

It seems she is armed with plans to conquer Bollywood and she is already on a roll.

She has one Hindi film with Bollywood star Aamir Khan due for release in October, a remake of her 2005 Tamil hit Ghajini (Victory).

Aamir was reportedly so impressed with her performance in the Tamil version, he signed her up to do the Bollywood remake.

She told Times of India that she is reprising her role from the Tamil version.

'But it's not a scene-by-scene remake. We've incorporated some changes in the script, which will make for a better movie. Even the songs are different, with AR Rahman's music.'

Asin has also signed on to star in two Hindi films, one with Salman Khan and Ajay Devgan, called London Dreams. The other is a yet-untitled project with Akshay Kumar

THE ONE TO WATCH

Adding to the growing hype around her, Asin will be appearing on the cover of the Vogue India's July issue, touted as one of the heroines to look out for in Bollywood.

Mumbai tabloid Mid Day reported that she has not signed on to star in any Tamil films after her current release, the blockbuster movie Dasavatharam (10 Avatars) produced by Kollywood mega-star Kamal Hassan.

However Tamil cinema's celluloid princess denies that she is moving to Bollywood for good.

She told the Times of India: 'I've had an apartment... for over a year. It was only last December that I moved there because my present commitments - both films and endorsements - require me to be in Mumbai.'

As for Tamil films, she said she was 'open to doing more films in Tamil if the right script comes along'.

The Bollywood media is predicting enthusiastically that the young actress will be the next big South Indian actress to make it big in Bollywood - joining the ranks of veteran South Indian actresses such as Vyjanthimala, Hema Malini, Rekha and Sridevi , all of whom went north to find their celluloid fortunes.

Asin , who hails from Kerala, made her acting debut in a Malayalam film in 2001.

Her entry into Tamil cinema was considered a jinx because most of her film projects were either cancelled, delayed or had money problems.

Her breakthrough came in 2004 when the film M Kumaran, Son Of Mahalakshmi became a hit. Her 2005 film Ghajini, with popular Tamil actor Surya , won her the Filmfare Best Actress Award.

Since then, she has been paired with big Tamil cinema names such as Vijay, Vikram and Ajith. As a result of her popularity, Asin is also big with advertisers, endorsing everything from beauty products to radio stations in India.

But how successful will she be in Bollywood, considering she is a newcomer to Mumbai's Tinseltown?

Singaporean producer JKSaravana, 27, who co-produced the hit Tamil film Chennai 60028 last year, feels she has a long way to go before she can make her mark.

Tamil cinema, he explained, is more conservative compared to Bollywood.

Hindi cinema actresses are willing to show a lot more flesh on screen compared to their Tamil cinema counterparts.

Mr Saravana said: 'If you look at the other Bollywood actresses like Deepika Padukone or Mallika Sherawat , she has a lot of competition.'

He cited the recent star-studded soundtrack launch of Asin's latest film Dasavatharam - with Jackie Chan and Amitabh Bachchan making appearances - as an example.

Mallika Sherawat, who had a small role in the film, was dressed in a short translucent black dress at the launch. She was oozing sex appeal.

In contrast, Asin, who was in a green Punjabi suit, looked like an overdressed, demure wallflower.

He said: 'She has a long way to go. It is really tough to say at this point how well she might do.'

Music producer Shivaranjini Moorthy, 25, feels Asin has what it takes to make it big in Bollywood.

She said: 'She has the talent. She can act well. I don't see why she can't be a success like Sridevi or Hema Malini.'
