As America gears up for its independence day (July 4) Bollywood and Kollywood too are moving into top gear.
On July 4, two big Hollywood films - Will Smith's Hancock and the action thriller Wanted are releasing worldwide. Theatres across the city will screen these two blockbusters.
In Bollywood it is the battle royale between two young kids who want to be future superstars. Leading producer Harry Baweja is putting everything to make his son Harman Baweja's debut
film Love Story-2050 work magic at the box-office, and make him a saleable star.Meanwhile Aamir Khan who owes a lot to his uncle Nasir Hussain and his QSQT, is pulling all stops to make his son Imran's debut film Jaane Tu Jaane Na, which he is producing, a huge success.
Meanwhile down south in Kollywood three movies in different genres are competing with each other at the box-office on July 4 weekend. Bharath, the fastest rising young star has his Muniyandi Vilangiyal Moondramaandu (MVM), a family action movie directed by the king of soap Thirumurugan, coming up on Friday. Another film with all newcomers with great retro music by debutant James Vasanth, which is eagerly awaited, is Subramaniapuram, directed by Sasi Kumar, a former assistant of noted director Ameer. And finally Tamilnadu Chief Minister M Karunanidhi's magnum opus as a script writer Ulliyin Osai is also in the fray. In Malayalam, Mohanlal's big action family drama Madambi is releasing this Friday.
The July 4, as a big release day is a recent phenomenon in Indian cinema. A few years back Malayalam actor Dileep started the trend of releasing on that particular day, as it was his lucky day. Bollywood too followed as they were on the lookout for a new big weekend, other than the usual summer and Diwali slots. The trade in Mumbai justified it by saying it is normally the first weekend after the monsoon rains of June, and the audiences are waiting to get out of their homes to catch up with some entertainment. And with Bollywood becoming really big in US, the July 4 independence day weekend became a major holiday season for the NRI's.
For the Tamil industry July 4, has become significant because of the backlog of movies that have piled up due to the release of Dasavatharam. Last year no producer wanted to release in June because of Sivaji Similarly this year it is Dasavatharam, which got a clear three weeks window time with no opposition. As far as the Chennai audiences starved of new releases are concerned all the July 4 biggies from Hollywood, Bollywood and Malluwood are releasing in the city along with the Kollywood entertainers. Enjoy!
