'Mum first' is the mantra Hema Malini swears by. The lady on her daughters – Esha's love for art and what makes Ahana angry.

She makes for the sexiest mother, on screen or off screen. And despite her actor-danseuse status, being a sitting MP and the tag of dreamgirl, Hema Malini describes herself as a mother first. So much so that the otherwise reticent lady opens up immediately once you mention the names of her daughters Esha and Ahana.

"Esha is doing exceedingly well and that makes me happy. But Esha is an artiste too and used to make wonderful paintings, when she was in school. A few days back, I learnt that some actresses are managing their films and painting as a hobby. Now, I keep suggesting the same thing to Esha as well, but she is only interested in Bollywood," says Hema , looking a tad worried.

When it comes to younger daughter Ahana, Hema says, "She is studying film direction and doesn't like it if I divulge much about her. And if the details are not completely right, she gets very angry."

Like mother, like daughter? After all, Hema is not the most forthcoming interviewee as well. Ask her about her political career and all she is ready to say is, "I am a parliamentarian and not a politician. I am an artiste and prefer to remain just that."

And what about Ramu's GenX take on Basanti in his Sholay? "No comments," she says, adding, "I am not too fond of remakes".

Point taken, especially as Hema is of the view that perfection cannot be improved. Her mantra for remaining sexy even today is, "Beauty is God's gift, the minimum you can do is to keep it as it is forever."
