Demoralised by failure and dejected at being ignored by her mentor, the actress seems to have disappeared from Bollywood
Antara Mali’s friends are really concerned about the actress’s whereabouts. All attempts by them to make contact with her have apparently come up against a deadend.
All her numbers have been disconnected temporarily and no one is answering her landline either. Now, the question is whether Antara is going the way Anu Agarwal and Chadrachud Singh went some time back. It's been a year since she signed any new film and she has not shown any interest in signing one either. "It was strange when Antara took this decision to withdraw completely. It seems that she has lost interest in films and might do something really different now," says our source.
Ram Gopal Varma's protégé, Antara created quite a stir. But a couple of inconsequential films and a disastrous directorial debut later, the actress vanished, severing ties from the industry completely. She was spotted last at the premiere of her directorial venture Mr Ya Mrs a year ago. "After Mr Ya Mrs released last year she had a misunderstanding with Ramu and she cut off all contact with The Factory. She was also disappointed with the harsh reviews she got for her film. It was demoralising for her," says our source.
She walked out of Varma's Shabri (where she was supposed to play the role of a female don) six months ago. Following this she withdrew from public eye completely. Antara was supposed to act and direct Shabri. But following her hasty exit, Varma promptly replaced her with Ishaa Koppikar and signed Lalit Marathe to direct the film. Confirming her disappearance, a source says, "Antara is in Mumbai, but she is unwilling to meet anyone or make any public appearance."
Allegedly, Antara was upset when her mentor shifted his focus from her to Nisha Kothari "Antara is a talented actress and she knows her job well. But she was disappointed when Nisha started getting importance over her," says our source. The actress was completely dependent on The Factory and did not work with any other producer after Ramu signed her for Company in 2002.
Antara’s Filmography, to date:
