The classic Hollywood hit "Fiddler on the Roof" could be remade in an Indian setting starring Amitabh Bachchan, if a plan by director-cinematographer Rajiv Menon goes through.

"There is a proposal to direct Fiddler on the Roof in the Indian context with Mr Amitabh Bachchan. But that is on hold right now. But I hope the project will see the light of the day soon," said Menon on his return from a 70-day shoot of Mani Ratnam's film "Guru" for which he is the cinematographer.

This is his second stint as a cinematographer for Mani Ratnam, the first being for the blockbuster "Bombay", which Menon describes as a turning point in his career.

An auteur himself, having made "Minsara Kanavu" and "Kandukondein Kandukondein", Menon is aware of the pressure that a director goes through while making a movie.

"Because both of us know each other and I did not realise that I'd enjoy doing cinematography so much, it was a real pleasure shooting and not having to worry about everything.

"I mean, you have to be worried about the image and things related to the image. But as a director, you are always worried...whether the scene is working, is the set looking right, are the costumes looking real and authentic and you completely understand what the director is going through, at that point of time," says Menon.

"The primary shooting of 'Guru' spread over 100 days. There was a lot of travel involved. We shot initially in Turkey, then in Badami, then Madras and a day in Hyderabad and back to Madras. Now, we are still left with two songs to finish, locations for which are still to be finalised," says Menon.
