During the American League's batting practice before the All-Star Game, A-Rod spent a few minutes chatting up Sheryl Crow in front of the Yankees dugout. The pair posed for pictures before A-Rod returned to the batting cage, although he sent a friend of his back to get Crow's signature on a baseball.

Asked if she was tentative about being photographed with A-Rod given the recent headlines linking him to Madonna, Crow laughed.

"They don't get bigger than Madonna," said Crow, who sang the national anthem before Tuesday night's game. "I feel pretty certain that that rumor would die very quickly."

SICK DAY: San Francisco pitcher Tim Lincecum checked into New York Presbyterian Hospital Tuesday afternoon seeking fluids to combat dehydration and flu-like symptoms, costing him a chance to attend his first All-Star Game.

All-Star closer Brian Wilson said he hadn't spoken to his Giants teammate Tuesday, but added "a bad flu was going through our team over the weekend in Chicago."

Lincecum 24, pitched eight strong innings Sunday against the Cubs to improve to 11-2 with a 2.57 ERA. He was scheduled to make his first All-Star appearance, but after being released from the hospital, he was unable to make it to the Bronx, resting in his hotel instead.

YAN-K-ROD? The Yankees nearly stole Francisco Rodriguez away from the Angels when Anaheim signed the brilliant closer as a 16-year-old out of Venezuela in 1998.

The Yankees, Diamondbacks, Rockies and Braves were in the race for K-Rod's services, and Rodriguez said the Yankee offer was "pretty decent. The Diamondbacks, too. Those were the best ones, other than the Angels. My dad was really sick then with cancer and he said to go with the Angels. He said, 'You might get more opportunities to get to the majors with them.' That's the advice he gave me and he wasn't wrong."

K-Rod's grandfather, also named Francisco - whom he called Dad because his grandfather raised him - died four months after K-Rod signed with the Angels. Rodriguez reached the majors in 2002, helping the Angels win the World Series that fall.

SIX SHOOTER: The last time Brad Lidge was at Yankee Stadium, he combined with five of his Astros teammates on a no-hitter against the Bombers. Lidge, making his second All-Star appearance, said that night was the highlight of his career.

"That's definitely at the top of the list for me," Lidge said. "How it happened, the guys I did it with, the memories I have from it; that was the first time I had to change my name at the hotel, because I got 100 phone calls into the night."

MICHIGAN MAN: Pittsburgh's Nate McLouth might be one of this year's more obscure All Stars, but when asked if he has a favorite player in the league he didn't hesitate to answer. "Derek Jeter is definitely my favorite player," said McLouth, who has scored 69 runs as the Bucs' leadoff man, fourth in the majors. When asked why, the Whitehall, Mich., native said, "Because he's a Michigan fan." McLouth turned down a baseball scholarship from the Wolverines to sign with the Pirates in 2000. McLouth has 19 homers this season; he had 25 combined in his previous three seasons. ... Kerry Wood wasn't available to pitch last night due to a blister.
