AL Azhagappan, the general secretary of Producers Association, who is producing ‘Padikkira Vayasu’ and ‘Kalakalappu’ has been arrested and put in jail. He is accused of murder threat and finance cheating.

In 2001, AL Azhagappan borrowed 50 lakhs from financier Vishal Jain for the purpose of making ‘Kanave.’ But he neither made the film nor returned the money. Since nothing would happen if he did not take action, Vishal Jain filed a case of cheating in court last year.

The case that had lain dormant for the past year has come back to life again. Vishal Jain has complained to the police that 4 days back, Azhagappan came with his men and threatened Vishal to take back his case. Following this, Azhagappan was arrested on 16th and put in central jail on charges of murder threat. Since the warrant on Azhagappan was also issued for non-payment of loan, the police took his signature for this accusation from him in the jail itself.

What is the reason for this case suddenly picking up tempo after being out of sight for one year?

During the previous ADMK regime, it is said AL Azhagappan had a large part in bringing about many anti-Sun TV decisions in the Producers Association like not giving songs, film clippings or trailers to Sun TV and also asking Sun TV to pay damages to the tune of 2000 crores for alleged misuse of film clippings. When the Association president TG Thyagarajan refused to go along with this, the Azhagappan clique forced Thyagarajan out of his post. Earlier a supporter of DMK, he became an ADMK supporter on the eve of the elections.

Political observers say this is a reason why the dust was removed from the old case and Azhagappan put behind bars now. But police sources say this is punishment for crimes committed.
