A product of Delhi's Shri Ram College of Commerce, famous Bollywood villain Gulshan Grover believes that the success of any movie depends not on one actor but on the work of the whole team, says Madhur Tankha.

He has excelled as a villain in Bollywood for more than one quarter of a century. And is now looked up to by emerging young actors for his histrionic skills and extraordinary ability to give powerful performances on the silver screen every time he is roped in by filmmakers. An actor par excellence, Gulshan Grover has given a new definition to villain in the Hindi film industry, where generally villains play second fiddle to heroes.

Gulshan was in the Capital to flag off the senior citizens' race of Hutch Delhi Half Marathon on Sunday. On being queried whether he would have essayed the epoch-making role of Gabbar Singh in " Ram Gopal Verma Ki Sholay", Gulshan thinks for a moment and then replies in the negative. With a deadpan face he says: "I would have flatly refused the role on the ground that it would have had a baneful affect on young children's minds."

But has he not already done a series of such roles that must have had a bad influence on impressionable minds? The senior actor says that children have emulated him as an actor in terms of dialogue delivery and hairstyle but Gabbar's role would have had terrible impact on children's minds.

Speaking about his background, Gulshan says: "I was born in the Capital's Tri Nagar and studied in a Hindi medium school. Through hard work I got admission in Shri Ram College of Commerce. As a student of commerce I know the significance a brand has on the consumer's mind. To popularise a brand you don't need a product with which you can brush your teeth as well as apply it on your hair. So I marketed myself into a premier villain."

Revealing that he speaks his mind on occasions, Gulshan says: "When a film is being made, I am willing to slog it out and directly collaborate with the director. If in a scene I feel that the character I am portraying cannot perform amicably, then I tell this to the director. If a filmmaker walks into my room and needs my tips or suggestions, I tell him. But I am ready to be guided even if the director is young in terms of age and experience. I believe every team, be it in the gentleman's game or in Bollywood, needs a leader."

On when his love affair with acting started, the baddie of Hindi films says: "I was into theatre even while in college. In fact, I was the president of Fine Arts' Society and also a member of Little Theatre Group. Later, I was a teacher at an acting school and Sanjay Dutt was my student. When Sunil Dutt saw me performing a scene, he decided to give me a break in `Rocky'. In the film, I got a chance to act alongside Sanjay as well as Tina Ambani, who was then Tina Munim."

Gulshan hates to admit that he had played an important part as a villain in Shah Rukh Khan's films' successes, like in "Yes Boss", "Ram Jaane" and "Duplicate". When told about this, Gulshan says that every actor has his field of specialisation.

Wolfing down a non-vegetarian sandwich, he says: "Every ingredient has its importance. It is like saying that because of tomato the sandwich is tastier or because of bread it is mouth watering. If those working around Shah Rukh Khan feel that the credit for these films goes entirely to him then it is not correct. In fact they are being foolish. Success of a film is always due to combined effort."

As a youngster he always looked up to Bihari babu Shatrughan Sinha, who with his high-baritone voice and panache had an influence on him. But Gulshan says that Sinha was never his role model. "Among villains, Pran was special because he could do a variety of roles with aplomb. Also, Amjad Khan."

On the senior citizens' race as part of Hutch Delhi Half Marathon, Gulshan says: "It is worthy to be a part of `Harmony' that is supporting senior citizens of our country. We may or may not have cancer or tuberculosis but we cannot get away with old age. Are we doing enough for elderly folks, neighbours and teachers? I don't think so. We need to do a lot more for them. In our film industry, there is lot of respect for seniors. In fact, our tradition of touching the feet of the elderly is still followed in the film industry."

On his upcoming Hollywood film "Marigold", which is a romantic and musical adventure, Gulshan says: "I am playing a mysterious guy who has kidnapped a girl but doesn't know what to do with her."

About the differences that cropped up between him and much sought after star Salman Khan, Gulshan brushes them aside. "Actually, Salman Khan is a friend's friend. He is a big actor."
