Apparently J P Dutta had to work hard to extract a good performance from Ash during the shooting of Umrao Jaan

Living up to a role essayed by Rekha could not be easy, especially since the actress also bagged a National award for the film. Apparently Aishwarya Rai buckled under great expectations while trying to recreate the same magic that Rekha did in Muzaffar Ali's Umrao Jaan.

Aishwarya might have worked with the best filmmakers, ranging from Mani Ratnam in Iruvar to Rituparno Ghosh in Chokher Bali, but apparently she choked at the finishing post for J P Dutta's film. She looked ravishing but initially her performance did not measure up to the expectations of the director. "I remember during shooting, even if she gave a good shot, I knew she was capable of better and would say to her, 'Will the real Ash stand up?' She would then deliver a perfect shot," recalls J P Dutta.

While many of her detractors tried to convince Dutta against taking Aishwarya , the filmmaker did not pay heed to them. "For the character of Umrao, a woman with a smile on her face and a tear in her eye, who could have been better than Aishwarya Rai?" he asks. But little did he know that he would have to work really hard to extract the best from her. Aishwarya on her part tried to abide by the director's order and would continue to give retakes cheerfully until the shot was okayed.

Did the actress object to Dutta's notorious high-handedness? "I wouldn't call it high-handedness. It all depends on my instinct at that time. That is why I prefer that my artistes come on the set with no mind at all. It's like a virgin who leaves it all to the person who knows how to make love," he explains.

So, what does one expect to see from the actress in this film? " One will get to see beyond her pretty face, as is happens whenever she works with directors who understand her. Besides Ash, I needed a man who could look like a poet and dreamer and at the same time could stand next to her as an ideal partner. When I closed my eyes, I could only see Abhishek as Nawab Sultan," he explains.

Dutta continues, "When they work with me over a period of time, I have seen that my artistes and technicians come to know what I want, without my having to literally spell it out to them." Evidently, Dutta is counting Ash among them too.
