Poet-turned director and lyricist, P. Bhaskaran, who had also acted in two films, died on Sunday afternoon. He was 83. Neelakkuyil was his directional debut. This film is believed to have played a vital role in ushering social�realism in Malayalam cinema.
He directed around 50 films. His movies Advakiranangal, Irruttinde Athmavu and Thurakkatha Vathil bagged National Film Awards. He made his debut as a lyricist by penning the Malayalam lines of a multi-lingual song in the Tamil movie Apurva Sahodarangal. Chandrika was his first Malayalam movie for which he wrote the lyrics.
As a lyricist, his works with the late Vayalar Ramavarma has been appreciated the most and has been known for their romantic touch and simple lines. He had been imprisoned for nine months for taking part in the Quit India movement during the pre-independance days.
He was cremated on Monday with police honours at the Thycaud crematorium in Thiruvananthapuram. In a condolence message, the Chief Minister, V.S. Achuthanandan said Bhaskaran Master's death was a heavy loss for cultural Kerala.
Several people reached his destination on hearing the news of his death. He is survived by his wife, Indira, and four children. Galatta.com grieves his death and prays that his soul may rest in peace.
