She had strutted the ramp and faced enough flashbulbs, but did not quite realise how nerve-wracking it would be to act it all out — until she faced Madhur Bhandarkar for her first shot for ‘Fashion’. The dusky Mugdha Godse is now happy about her role as a failed model, as Bhandarkar ponders on the seamy side of the extravaganza we see on the runway.
Dressed in a black singlet and denims, her minimalistic look a sharp contrast to her glam avatar on screen, the 23-year-old confesses to exhaustion, as she juggles ad shoots, promotions and dubbing. “I am so excited — and nervous. Ever since the promos started on the TV, the expectations have gone up though the enormity of the situation has yet to sink in,” she says.
In the movie to be released around Diwali , Godse plays Janet Sequeira, alongside Priyanka Chopra, Kangana Ranaut and Arbaaz Khan. “The movie is about the emotional journey of models at different stages of their careers and Madhur has captured it aptly,” she says.
Between posing for photographs, she says she had no inkling she could act. Hers has been the typical small-town-girl story. “I studied in a Marathi-medium school in Pune. It was in college that I understood the basics of grooming,” she says. Her ambition drove her to the sequined universe of fashion. Then at an ad shoot, Bhandarkar spotted her and offered the part in ‘Fashion ‘— and Bollywood easily became part of her resume.
It was after Godse signed the film that the grill began. She attended a crash course in acting at Anupam Kher’s school and took Kathak lessons, which she claims helped her synchronise expressions, movements and feelings. Recounting her first time in front of the camera, she boasts at having given her first shot in just two takes. “And once the shot was okayed, everybody applauded. I can still hear the sound of those claps,” she adds.
The Bollywood bug has bitten and the debutante is clearly not keen on continuing her old life as a model — she has cut down her ad assignments and has been attending script-reading sessions. Her three-movie deal with Percept is also in the pipeline, but there is one more bow on the runway. “You will see me at the forthcoming Lakme Fashion Week ... this time as a show stopper,” she laughs.
