Harman Baweja believes in moving on. And how. For an actor whose debut film didn’t really set the box office afire, he is on a high as he has four big-budget films lined up — Ajit Pal’s Victory; Anees Bazmee’s It’s my life; Ashutosh Gowarikar’s What’s your Rashee; and Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Chenab Gandhi. Love Story 2050 may not have done well but “it will always be my first film”, says Harman.
In town to shoot for It’s my life, a romantic comedy, Harman talks of many things, including Priyanka Chopra. “She been my friend for five years and people just assume we are going around, or getting engaged…” he says, emphatic that he is “single, but not ready to mingle”. He happily says that he’s most comfortable with her as his leading lady in a film, but that’s because “she has no airs” and he “knows her nature so well” that it becomes easier with her.
Butter fingers
Anything about Priyanka that bugs him? “She’s clumsy,” he says with a laugh. “You know what she’s had for lunch because she will have all these little food spots on her shirt.” Paired with her in What’s Your Rashee, Harman is sure that his friendship with the actress will come under scrutiny once again.
His idea of an attractive woman: “Her eyes, her wrists, and her hair should be styled in a way that flatters her.” This first look needs to be reinforced by a sense of humour and an unpretentious nature.
Wish list
Harman has to shoot for a couple of weeks more for Victory , a film that’s going to bring together many international cricketers and in which Harman sports the rustic look — sun-bleached hair, earring and the works — with Amrita Rao as his love interest. From village lad, he moves to being the boy-next-door in It’s My Life, paired opposite Genelia D’Souza.
About his look in What’s Your Rashee, he is tight-lipped, not wanting to incur “Ashu Sir’s” wrath. One guesses, though, that his new fitness routine has something to do with his next film. “I want to look lean”, he says, and is halfway there with “three and a half” abs.
With Chenab Gandhi, Harman ticks off one item in his ‘things-to-do before I die’ checklist — he’s acting with Amitabh Bachchan. Vidya Balan is his heroine in this one.
What else is on his wish list? “Dancing with Michael Jackson; to have a very big house where my entire family can live a la a Sooraj Barjatiya film; and to learn how to fly a plane and then fly one.” He was hooked to dancing at the age of seven when his dad, Harry, taught him “ how to do the wave”.
Is there a wild side to him? That has Harman thinking. “I was 16 and studying in Switzerland and I asked for my school-leaving certificate without even telling my parents.”
One of the current heartthrobs of Bollywood did have an embarrassing moment involving a girl, “I was in Class VIII and I went up to this girl I had a crush on and said, ‘I want to be more than friends with you.’ Imagine my horror when she said, ‘I don’t even want to be friends with you, leave alone more than that.’” After this snub, Harman was teased mercilessly, with many classmates smirking, “Want to be more than friends with me?” Harman had the last laugh, however — he went to become not only friends with the girl but “a little more than that”. Crush over, they are still friends.
His haven
Harman misses his family and his room when he’s shooting away from Mumbai for long. His room is his haven, kitted out with a great music system and done up in blue, silver and wood. The actor is a huge fan of Rihanna, Pussycat Dolls, Beyonce, Mariah Carey — he’s an R&B and hip-hop fan. And one of his favourite film roles is that of Al Pacino in the gangster classic Scarface.
As he puts on his sunglasses for a photo, Harman says cheekily, “You want a shady look, eh?”
