It was the best ever Onam for Malayalam cinegoers. They did not had to go to the theatres to see films, all the latest super hits were shown on television. Take a look at what was on television during Onam 2008-
Uthradam - September 11
ASIANET- Morning Show- Rasathantram, Matinee- Prajapati, Evening- Classmates
SURYA- Morning Show- Maayavi, Matinee- Nivediyam, Evening- Chotta Mumbai
Thiruonam - September 12
ASIANET- Morning Show-Aana Chantham, Matinee- Balaram Vs Tharadas, Evening- Keerthichakra
SURYA- Morning Show- July 4, Matinee- Big-B, Evening Chocolate
KAIRALI- Matinee Pothen Vava
AMRITA TV- Matinee Ore Kadal, Evening- Hallo.
Please note 10 of these films which released during the last one year were premiered on television this Onam. There has never before been such a wide choice of films on TV, making the viewer hold on to his remote tightly. Almost all these films had interval every 10 minutes, followed by 10 minutes of commercials!
In many households fighting broke out, between family members over which film to watch, as they all wanted the remote in their hands! As per early indications Ore Kadal, Chocolate and Keerthi Chakra had record TRP's. The clear picture will emerge only a week after the television rating agency come out with the correct ratings.
Meanwhile theatres Kerala were badly hit due to this television onslaught of movies on Thiruonam day. Added to that this time there were no superstar films releasing and the Noyambu effect was being felt in theatres across the state. Early reports indicate two of the three films released for Onam are disasters.
Many years back on Onam day, people used to flock to cinema theatres to see movies. It was one day in the year when theatres report 100 percent, not any longer. This year Onam day in Ernakulam, there was only an average 35 percent occupancy in theatres in the city!
