After much ballyhoo, MTV has announced that Britney Spears will open the 25th annual Video Music Awards on Sunday at Paramount Studios in Hollywood, The Associated Press reported. Ms. Spears’s performance at last year’s awards was widely criticized, but this year she is not scheduled to perform.
Her video for the song “Piece of Me” has been nominated for three awards, including best female video, best pop video and video of the year. “MTV has long played an important role in my career,” Ms. Spears said in a statement. “How can I not be there to kick off their 25th V.M.A.’s? I’m excited to open the entire show, to say hi to my fans and to be nominated.” Ms. Spears has never won an MTV Video Music Award. The awards will be hosted by the British comedian Russell Brand.
