Remember Manjit, ‘the silly village girl’? Well, the small town girl has grown up to be a super model. And is back in her hometown for interviews. Well, no points for telling the real from the reel but Priyanka Chopra has fit well in the role of a Chandigarh-based girl chasing her glam dreams in Madhur Bhandarkar’s Fashion, and as the director puts it, “it’s her best performance so far.” Does she agree? “The character is certainly a powerful one.
It encompasses the journey of fame, struggle, glamour, ups and downs and then coming home to reality.” Coming from Ambala, Chopra went on to win a pageant and become one of the most successful stars of Bollywood. But its Aiteraaz that she finds most challenging so far. “The role tested me in so many ways since I played a negative character.” Despite the challenges, she is game for more! While her comedy flick God Tussi Great Ho with Salman Khan is set for a release, Chamku opposite Bobby Deol portrays her in a serious sole sans make up. And then there is the SFX laden action “fantasy-based and action-packed adventure” Drona “I play Abhishek‘s bodyguard and you will see me in a new look with a Pagri on!” she smiles. Is that the girl gang’s answer to Akshay? “The Pagri I don is a version of a Punjabi turban stylized to suit my character in the film.”
And with so much new and exciting happening what prayers does she hold between crossed fingers? “None actually.” Do we believe that? “Yes, because I follow a no strings attached approach. Till the project is on, I’m involved in it, how it is received is not my business. I care only about my work.” We ask her about Love Story 2050 and all she has to say is that maybe the audience wasn’t ready. And before we can play the Harman Baweja card, she is quick to comment, “Speculations are a part and parcel of the game when you are a public personality. You have to learn not to get affected or react and move on,” which we take as a cue to us to move on! Okay, we think, why annoy the girl whose crew had already been warning us for two hours against taking her picture in the movie outfits. “The film needs that,” she explains. So how was working for Fashion? “Great.
I had a chance to work with Kangana Ranaut who I can say is one of the most fun, supportive and brilliant co-stars I have worked with. And Madhur (Bhandarkar) can make everybody act.” She spills the beans that even friends and family have acted, as an ‘Oops!’ faced Bhandarkar looks on. “Since many of friends and family stay in Chandigarh I feel very comfortable here. I almost know my way around the city!” And with that the floor manager called it a wrap and Chopra moved from the real interview to the reel interview for her movie.
