How was it working in Singh Is Kinng?
Fabulous. It was an experience in itself. The most important thing was being with talented actors, working with foreign units, and Anees Bazmee for the first time. I’m happy to be a part of a movie that is a blockbuster even before its release.
How was Akshay Kumar as a co-star?
Akshay surprises you every day. He only gets better, funnier and fitter with every passing day. I learnt a lot from him — he would wake up at 5 am and work out and I would think, “If he can do it, so can I.”
You once said, ‘In Bollywood, only sex or SRK sells.’ Do you still stand by that?
I don’t know about me but filmmakers still swear by that — they want to make everyone look sexy or they want SRK — it’s quite a formula.
How do you react to your sex symbol tag?
I always battle with this word — sexy. I never find myself sexy at all. Anyway, you have got to be slotted in some category, but I’m working towards getting the image of a talented actress. It’s getting better every day. I saw my performance in one film and I was like, “Is this really me?” One must have his or her own individuality and never try to ape anyone. You just need something as simple as common sense to be a good actor.
Are you doing an item number for a Pakistani movie?
Not that I know of, but I love the new breed of Pakistani singers. They sound wonderful and they look wonderful as well. The whole Asian pop scene is getting big.
Are you also on the size zero bandwagon?
I’m definitely a fitness freak and I don’t care how I look but I feel very fit. I could run a marathon in the next five minutes and I won’t need any prep for it. I believe in lots of yoga, great nutrition and a fitness regimen.
The performance closest to your heart?
A lot of them. I had a great time shooting for Singh is Kinng, Raat gayi baat gayi, and Mithya. Singh is Kinng is an out-and- out commercial, mindless entertainer — and I’m allowed to say so because that is what we are trying to make here. We are giving unadulterated entertainment and a money’s-worth film.
What about your relationship with [squash player] Ritwik Bhattacharya and hopes for the future?
It’s great. As for hopes, I don’t know. But we are taking it really slow. We’ve known each other for 10-11 years and now we’ve been dating for a little while. We are both in stages of our career where that [work] is the priority for us. And in all honesty, this is where our energies are being focussed right now.
