A R Rahman's nephew, G V Prakash has composed the music of Rajnikanth's latest film Kuselan.
In an exclusive chat, NDTV's T S Sudhir finds out more about the youngster.
T S Sudhir: You have now come into the big league, how does it feel?
Prakash: Thanks. It has been a wonderful experience. Since childhood I have been a great fan of Rajnikanth. Every composer dreams to compose for the superstar. I am really thankful to Vaasu Sir and the producer of the movie Kavithalaaya.
T S Sudhir: How did you react when you were told that you will compose for a Rajini film?
Prakash: I was thrilled. I got a call from Vaasu Sir's office. They said we want to discuss a project with me. I asked what is it about. They said it is Rajini sir's project. Without wasting anytime I rushed to meet Vaasu sir. He said he had liked my previous compositions for Keereedam and signed me for the movies. Even my dad didn't believe. He was shocked.
T S Sudhir: So for how many days you were in a daze?
Prakash: Oh, it took two to three days (laughs).
T S Sudhir: What was the brief that Vaasu gave you about the music?
Prakash: Actually he didn't restrict me at all. He even asked me not to watch the Malayalam movie they were remaking.
T S Sudhir: But that film had just two songs.
Prakash: Yes, he asked me to take a fresh narration.
T S Sudhir: Daler Mehndi has been roped in to sing for Rajinikanth.
Prakash: Yes
T S Sudhir: How come you thought of Daler to sing for Rajini?
Prakash: Immediately after composing Om Zaarare, I thought of Daler. I am a big fan of him.
T S Sudhir: This is first time he is singing in Tamil. He has sung in Telugu though.
Prakash: He sung for Telugu but he never sung in Tamil. He was so thrilled to sing for Rajini sir.
T S Sudhir: How much time did it take for him to learn Tamil?
Prakash: We took two days, one day for Tamil and one day for Telugu. It was a superb experience working with him.
T S Sudhir: And there is a song which introduces the Superstar, which has been sung by Shanker Mahadevan. How does that go?
Prakash: Actually this song is not a regular opening song. It is about cinema and the superstar. It is the first frame of Rajini sir.
T S Sudhir: Is it because he is playing a superstar in the movie?
Prakash: Yes, the song is about the superstar and it has a big intro.
T S Sudhir: It shouldn't pale in comparison with Muthu and Padayappa
Prakash: It will not. That's why we have gone into a different genre altogether.
T S Sudhir: Given the fact that previous Rajini movies have music composed by Ilayaraja, Rahman, Vidyasagar, was there any pressure on you?
Prakash: I have done only five movies so far. I have a long way to go. Comparisons will be there. I have to convince everyone with my music.
T S Sudhir: Has the superstar himself heard the song?
Prakash: Yes he has and he said he loved the song. I met him on the sets, he was very happy.
T S Sudhir: What did he say?
Prakash: He said the song is superb and it will be a big hit. Usually he doesn't say all these things. He was thrilled about Om Zaarare. He knows the pulse of the audience. Even I feel this is my best so far.
T S Sudhir: Why do you say that?
Prakash: Because all songs are really good.
T S Sudhir: Apart from Om Zaarare, which song you think is close to your heart?
Prakash: My other favourite is the song by Hariharan and Sujatha called Sollamma Sollamma.
T S Sudhir: You have sung for Rahman when you were even younger.
Prakash: Yes, I sang for Rahman sir in Anniyan.
T S Sudhir: What would you say is your strength?
Prakash: Lot of my directors tell me that my melody is really strong and I also believe that my programing is strong. I think that lot of work happens in my editing and programming and my melodies are strong as they say.
I also have a very good way of selecting my singers. Like I introduced Kailash Kher in Tamil and Daler in Tamil now. I like to get different vocals for my tunes and it adds different flavour to my compositions.
T S Sudhir: How do you feel when critics, admirers and fans compare with your uncle?
Prakash: I come from Rahman's school of music. So comparisons don't worry me at all.
T S Sudhir: You have sung for Rahman but when did he spot your music talent? What did he say to you?
Prakash: Actually he was looking for a programmer. At that time I used to program a lot of stuff so my grandmother called me once and said that Rahman is looking for a programmer. I met him and gave my showreel. He was really impressed.
T S Sudhir: You started composing at a young age. Do directors or producers take you seriously or look at you as a young boy?
Prakash: May be in my first movie, my director might have thought like that but after the success of Veyyil the perceptions changed. The way we discuss the scripts, they know how matured I am. It is not just about age, it's about how you think.
T S Sudhir: It was picturised very well, it had that pace.
Prakash: Yes, that was one song which I was really happy about. I try to give lot of images in my audio. Usually you get ideas only you see movie. But in my audio itself I try and bring that grandness. When it is a winter song, they should feel cool and when it is a summer song they should feel warm. I treat audios very intensely.
T S Sudhir: Is it a lot of music at home as your mother is also a singer?
Prakash: No, we don't discuss music at all. I don't interfere in her work and vice-versa.
T S Sudhir: Are her comments critical?
Prakash: Yes, she is my biggest critic.
T S Sudhir: What did AR have to say about Veyyil?
Prakash: He liked it. Only recently I ventured into Telugu. Next I have to get into Hindi music. There have been some nice offers and then I will head towards Hollywood.
T S Sudhir: Oh, you are really planning ahead?
Prakash: Ya, I don't stick to one level and I don't stay with it. I get bored.
T S Sudhir: Thank you very much, it was a pleasure
Prakash: Thanks
