G enelia D’Souza began doing films for the novelty value as they happened to come her way and she believed her debut film Tujhe Meri Kasam would be her first and last, then thought Boys (in Telugu) would be her last flick. Luckily offers kept coming and she became the only actress to debut in three different languages (third being a Tamil film).

“Before these films even released in 2003 I was booked in Telugu movies for 2004. Slowly I started enjoying films as a career,” confesses the actress who is one of the few lucky ones to be enjoying a good run in both Tollywood and Bollywood now after bagging the lead role in Aamir Khan’s film Jaane Tu… Still considered a newcomer in Bollywood, Genelia is “ super glad” she is a star down South as the range of work she has done here and the big hits like Bommarillu and now Ready have given her lots of confidence. And offers too.

Anees Bazmi has cast her opposite Harman Baweja in the Hindi remake of Bommarillu and Aamir Khan chose her as the heroine in his nephew Imran’s debut film Jaane Tu… It might appear that she is very lucky to land a part in an Aamir Khan production, but from her point of view it was more scary than lucky. “After Bommarillu , which was a huge hit, I was shaky about leaving all the success behind and starting off as a new comer in Jaane Tu…” she confesses. But Genelia says the film is a huge feather in her cap because, “You just don’t get cast in an Aamir Khan film, you are put through the grind. Just like with Boys, I had to do a screen test with like 400 girls for Jaane Tu… It’s not like someone did you a favour by giving you the role, you have got it on your merit.” Shooting was an absolute party as she instantly clicked with Imran the first time they met.

Also the movie became her life as the actors were asked to live their characters. And Genelia became her screen persona Aditi in real life too.

Playing a bubbly college girl maybe easy, but looking like one on screen is not, especially if you have been in the industry for a while. “ In South it is very hard for actresses to survive after a year as everyone wants a new face. You have to have enough freshness in you as the camera captures everything. I am bubbly and cute and I find ways to portray my USP.” Talent, the actress feels is always recognised.

Showbiz is such an extravagant, talked about medium that it’s easy to fall into the trap of wanting to constantly court fame. But the belief that she will anyway get her share of fame and credit through work gives her the confidence to do things she wants to do. “I party if I want to, not just because the entire industry is going to be present at an event that night.” The secret to being young, fresh and happening appears to lie in maintaining a straight head and healthy lifestyle, rather than botox.
