Mohanlal celebrates his 48th birthday today (May 21) on the location of his new film Madambi. In an informal birthday celebration in the afternoon, Mohanlal cut a huge cake and later participated in a traditional vegetarian feast. Meanwhile, Club FM 94.3 broadcast songs sung by Mohanlal to mark the happy occasion.
Coincidently, the shooting is taking place in his favourite location at Varikkaseri Mana, near Ottapalam. This is the house of Manglassery Neelakandan, the feudal landlord in film Devasuram, one of the most memorable characters the actor has ever enacted.
Mohanlal was born to Viswanathan Nair and Santhakumari in
Pathanamthitta district of Kerala in 1960. His elder brother Pyarilal died prematurely a few years ago. Lal has struggled much in his college days to get entry into the world of theatre and cinema. His opening came with `Manjil Virinja Pookal’ (1980) though it was a negative role.
He was awarded the Padma Shri, India's fourth highest civilian honor by the Indian Government in 2001 for his contributions to Indian cinema.
He is the only actor in Malayalam cinema to be awarded the best actor award (Kerala State film awards) in six times (1986, 1991, 1995, 1999, 2005 and 2007.
He has won the National award for the best actor (twice) for his roles in Bharatham (1991) and Vaanaprastham (1999). He has bagged the Kerala State Award for Best Actor four times for his roles in T.P. Balagopalan M.A. (1986), Ulladakkam (1991), Kilukkam (1988), Abhimanyu, Kala Pani (1996), Sphadikam (1995) Vaanaprastham (1999). Mohanlal was awarded the Nation's civilian honour of Padmashree in 2001.
Lal has also produced some films, of which, multi-lingual `Kaalapani’ remains the most memorable. The best tributes to his talents came from Mani Ratnam. It was while Mohanlal was acting in Iruvar that its director Mani Ratnam said about Mohanlal, "Hereafter, I will never work with a man of whom I am a fan. I often forgot to say 'Cut' in Iruvar."
