Jannat’s lead actress Sonal Chauhan clears the air about being involved with drug dealer Sahil Zarro of Rahul Mahajan drug scandal
Sonal Chauhan , who stars in Mahesh Bhatt's upcoming film Jannat, had come under the scanner in the Rahul Mahajan drug scandal in Delhi on June 2, 2006.
For those who've come in late, Rahul Mahajan and Bibek Moitra, former personal secretary of the late BJP leader Pramod Mahajan, had consumed a cocktail of morphine, cocaine and heroin at the Safdarjung Road official residence of his father in the early hours of June 2. Moitra had died due to overdose of the drugs. Another accused in the case, Sahil Zarro who was said to have supplied the drugs to Rahul and Bibek was said to be friendly with Sonal. It was reported that besides making 18 calls to a Mumbai-based drug dealer Abdullah that night, Sahil had also made several calls, post-midnight, to Sonal. Sahil was accompanied by three other guys to join in the drug party- Rahul Malhotra, Karan Ahuja and Tishay Khanna. Reportedly, Sonal and Sahil were more than just good friends. Ever since that day, Sonal had been keeping low profile.
When contacted, Mahesh Bhatt was shocked that we had stumbled upon Sonal's controversial past. "Why do you want to rake up her past now?" But like always, he was frank and forthcoming. He said, "Yes, she is the same girl. She had come under the scanner in the Mahajan case."
Bhatt further said that he knew about Sonal-Sahil connection only after he had signed her for Jannat. "But she has distanced herself from that now," the filmmaker added.
Kunal Deshmukh (director of Jannat) said, "Bhatts (Mahesh and Mukesh) had finalised Sonal for Showbiz and Raaz 2. Meanwhile, I had finalised Esha Deol for Jannat. Esha backed out and Mukesh Bhatt suggested that I consider Sonal for the lead role in Jannat. As for her past, yes, she is the same girl who came under the scanner in Rahul Mahajan case - but I got to know about that only recently."
So why didn't Sonal do Showbiz and Raaz 2? Kunal explained, "Sonal said that she didn't want to do Showbiz and Bhatts didn't want to repeat her in Raaz 2. Sonal is beautiful and attractive, and as for her talent, I think she has done a wonderful job and is here to stay."
Sonal had earlier denied that she was in a serious relationship with Sahil Zarro, but it is a fact Gargi College, where she has graduated from, is close to Sahil’s residence at Panchsheel Park. Buzz was that, that's where the Sonal-Sahil relationship had begun.
When contacted, Sonal Chauhan, who is currently shooting for a Telugu film in Hyderabad, was initially reluctant to talk about her past. But after a bit of prodding she admitted that she indeed was the girl who Sahil had called on that fateful day. "But please, Sahil did not call me 18 times as reported. He did call me a few times, and that too, before the Rahul Mahajan incident happened. Why would he call me after the incident, I was never his girlfriend? I am sure that he had a lot many other things on his mind after the incident," she said.
Sonal added that had it not been for her parents, she would not have been able to deal with the situation. "My mom and dad were in Delhi and I was in Mumbai, that day. They rallied around me and I beat the stress. And let me also tell you that it's not true that Rahul Malhotra, Karan Ahuja and Tishay Khanna stayed close to my house in Delhi. In fact, I don't even know those guys. It was very unfortunate that I got embroiled in a controversy which I had nothing to do with."
So why did she disappear? Where was she for so long? She replied, "I did not disappear. I had nothing to be scared of. I had done no wrong and trust me, I was not called even once by the cops for interrogation. I was very much in Mumbai and modelling for some advertisements."
Sahil Zarro, the son of a carpet dealer, was a regular on the party circuit and allegedly had a high-profile clientele for drugs. "I am not a party-girl and I certainly didn't know that Sahil was a drug peddler," Sonal shot back.
Is she in touch with Sahil now? Sonal quipped, "No way! After that day, neither he called me nor did I. I don't even know where he is today."
