She stepped into Mollywood with a sparkling debut. But her roles in the films that followed werent impressive.
Samvritha Sunil was almost written off. Until she proved her mettle in the couple of films that went on to become super hits in 2007. Her success saga prompted directors from Kollywood and Tollywood to approach her. Yes, I have been getting offers from Tamil and Telugu. But I have decided to accept those only when I am done with the projects Ive committed to in Malayalam, says the actor who is right now busy preparing for her MBA exam.
With Chocolate becoming a big hit and her role in Rajasenans Romeo winning hearts, Samvritha is busy with her new projects. Kalchilambu directed by debutant director M D Anoor is her new film. The actor is the female lead in the offbeat movie that deals with the lives of theyyam artists.
I was born and brought up in Kannur - the land of theyyam. My grandmother has told me many stories about the art form. I think I am lucky to be the heroine of a theyyam-oriented film, says Samvritha, the elder daughter of Sunil and Sadhana. As an actress, I was able to use my creativity in this film. I did the role of a Nambuthiri girl who passes through teenage and middle age in the film, she says.
Samvritha is all set to act in a new film directed by Kamal. In this film, I play the role of a Muslim girl who is an IT student. My hero in the film is Indrajith. Narein, Jayasurya, Meera Jasmine and Roma are also part of the film.
Chocolate was a campus-oriented film. But this film gives importance to the personal life of the characters on campus, she says. Though her latest film Romeo is only an average hit, Samvritha is not disappointed. Because I consider every movie a new experience and try to learn from each one. When I commit to do a film, I am not bothered if it will be a hit or not. I just look at the importance of my character.
2007 was a good year for the actor. Two of her films - Arabikatha and Chocolate - became blockbusters. During my schooldays, acting in films was a distant dream. When I was in Class X, I was featured on the cover of an onam magazine, seeing which director Ranjith invited me to act in Nandanam. But I couldnt accept the role as I was busy with my board exams.
It was when she was doing her first year of graduation in St Teresas College that Lal Jose invited her to act in Rasikan. It was with the full support of my family that I started a career in films. Many offers came my way after Rasikan. Now in the fourth year of my film career, I am happy about all the characters Ive done so far. The role of Surabhi that I did in Vasthavam was appreciated. Though my character appears only in some scenes, I got an astonishing response from the audience. Surabhi and my character in Achanurangatha Veedu are my favourite roles.
Samvritha has also acted in Kollywood and Tollywood and the films were hits. Sobhana and Manju Warrier are my favourite actresses. But I cannot say the name of my favourite heroes. For obvious reasons!
Samvritha has no qualms in saying that she is a lazy girl when at home. Sleeping is my favourite hobby. But now, I am busy with studies. If I had not come to tinseldom, I might have chosen journalism as a career. Acting is definitely not my ultimate profession. So I concentrate on studies even when Im busy with films, she says candidly.
