Shimit Amin's Chak De! India and Anil Sharma's Apne united two of the most followed religions in India.. movies and sports. But do these two religions go well like bread and butter or is it the snake and goose combo?
There have been very few movies in Bollywood that are sport-centric and have fared well at the box office. Jo Jeeta Wohi Sikandar is still remembered fondly although it was a bit of a commercial downer for Mansoor Khan.
Lagaan and Iqbal were benchmarks in their own distinct ways - one gradly scaled, the other one, more intimate.
Though the Bombay movies cannot boast of a pure sport movie genre, news is that the success of Chak De! has triggered several projects dealing with mainstream and offbeat sports. While Hollywood has had its share of great field moments with Million Dollar Baby, Escape to Victory , Chariots of Fire and Rookie of the Year, Bombay cinema will roll out Vivek Agnihotri's Dhan Dhana Dhan Goal.
Marathon (about athletics ) and Meerabai Not Out (featuring Anil Kumble in a special appearance) have been in the making for long. Director Vicky Singh, Farhan Akhtar's ex-assistant, plans to make Raaste with John Abraham , Abhishek Bachchan and Sikandar Kher.
John will play a biker, Abhishek a car racer and Sikandar a truck driver! This film is to be shot on the rugged terrain of Mexico. They will be coached by the legendary Steve Kelso who taught Saif Ali Khan the sports driving moves for Ta Ra Rum Pum.

Soham Shah (Kaal) has been planning a movie on adventure sports toplining Ajay Devgan. Newcomer Sanjay Chauhan will direct Lahore about kickboxing. As a producer, Subhash Ghai gives a glam touch to cycling in Cycle Kick directed by Shashi Sudigala. A spin, it is said, is being given to the Mohammad Azharuudin story, incarnated by Kay Kay Menon, in Shoonya.
David Dhawan is planning Hook ya Crook based on cricket. Choreographer-turned-director Ahmed Khan was all set to make a multi-starrer on football Mazhab, earlier titled Yahan Ke Hum Sikandar.
Nana Patekar was playing the coach of a team comprising Vivek Oberoi , Suniel Shetty, Arjun Rampal, Sohail Khan, Bobby Deol and Aftab Shivdasani.
"My movie is on hold at the moment but I will make it for sure," says Ahmed.
"After all, sport seems to be the hot ticket of the day."
