Bhangra pop-singer Daler Mehndi says, “I want to teach a lesson to those responsible for having unethically dubbed my voice for the title number ‘Jhoom daler_01Barabar Jhoom’ without my knowledge and consent.” Currently on a trip to the city, the Delhi-based Daler grouses, “Director Shaad Ali invited me from Delhi to record the song. Even after using my voice in the opening portions and concluding parts, he has the audacity to tell me that the director is the ‘ultimate boss’ who knows what is not necessary for his film.”
He continues, “And now, after I served them the legal notice for breach of trust and claiming damages, they are hinting that it was Bachchan saab (Amitabh) who felt the need to do away with my track. How can they forget that he loved to dance with me in the number ‘Na na na rey’ in his film ‘Mrityudaata’ (‘97)?”
Daler continues, “I am not one of those who take things lying down. However, I am willing to work again with Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy, because they are fabulous composers.”
Daler also has high regards for maestro A R Rehman with whom he recorded the hit number ‘Rang De Basanti’. Recently, Daler has also recorded numbers for movies including ‘Goal,’ and a qawwali for ‘No Smoking’.
The trained classical musician belonging to the Patiala gharana adds, “I sang a Telugu number for composer M M Kreem. I have also recorded a Sindhi ‘Jhulelal’ number.”
Ask whether, like singer-turned-actor Himesh Reshammiya, he too was nursing a secret desire to face the camera and he retorts, “If the script and my role are good and if they are paying me the price of a star, why not? Way back, director Rahul Rawail had offered to cast me in a movie, which had Kajol in a double role. But it didn’t work out. Let destiny decide if I should dabble in acting,” he ends.
