It's not everyday that Shilpa Shetty takes off her skirt on the sets of a film. And onlookers were, naturally, zapped. After all, it wasn't in the script.
Before we get into that, lets rewind a bit.
We're on the sets of Anurag Basu's Metro, starring the beautiful actress, Kay Kay Menon, Shiney Ahuja, Konkona Sensharma and Irrfan.
The film, produced by UTV, includes a set of parallel stories about how relationships take a back seat in cities.
Basu, who gave us hits like Murder and Gangster, underwent a personal crisis when he was diagnosed with blood cancer a few years ago. Thankfully, he is now on the road to recovery.
The location for the day is what used to be Hotel Horizon in Juhu (Mumbai's posh suburb). Incidentally, the place is 'haunted,' as a couple of suicides took place some years ago.
Basu claims he chose the place as it came cheaper. He had also shot portions of Gangster in the same venue.
The scene on the sets is calm. Basu does not believe in raising his voice or losing his cool.
He starts off by preparing his actors, Shilpa, Kay Kay and child artist Sagarika, for the next scene.
It is an emotional scene between Shilpa and Sagarika, who plays her daughter. Shilpa plays a busy career woman, who cannot spend enough time with her family. One day, she comes home to find her daughter sick in bed. And she breaks down.
Shilpa, who looked exhausted, did not get the scene right the first time. She applies glycerine to add tears. But that does not help either.
She has a talk with the director again. Even though there are about 50 people working on the sets, there is pin drop silence.
And then she delivers a stunning performance.
Even after the director cries 'cut,' the crew is silent. They appear shaken by the scene that was just canned.
And that's when Shilpa decided to take off her skirt to break the tension.
"Did you see their face?" she asks, breaking into peels of laughter.
Under her skirt, the actress had tight denim capris on.
