The Pongal season, the biggest event on Tamil film trade calendar starts on Friday, January 11. This year, 2008 will have a long Pongal weekend from Saturday, Jan 12 to Thursday Jan 17, six continuous days of holidays.
It clearly means bonanza for Kollywood as ordinary people will be having a lot more money (bonus is paid out at this time of the year for government and private sector employees and for farming community it is harvest season) and the weather throughout Tamilnadu is pleasant in January. And traditionally a movie or two is a must on common man’s Pongal menu.
Well the industry should be rejoicing, but on the contrary they are still unsure of which film will release. The original Pongal list was- Cheran’s Piravum Sandhipum, Silambarasan’s Kaalai, Madhavan’s Vazhthukal, Myskin’s Anjathey, Bharath’s Palani, Late Jeeva’s Dhaam Dhoom, Prakash Raj’s Vellithira Dhanush’s Yaradi Nee Mogini and Vadivel’s Indralokathil Na Azhagappan.
Now with Bheema getting censored and threatening to release for Pongal, a lot of producers have got cold feet. As of now, those with confirmed theatre bookings are Piravum Sandhipum, Kaalai,Vazhthukal, Palani , the others will take a call depending on A.M Ratnam’s moves! A clearer picture would emerge by Tuesday (Jan 8), nearer to the ‘Big Friday’ (Jan 11).
