Wedding frenzy has swept Rome and Hollywood's top couple Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes are to blame. The pair are expected to tie the knot at a lakeside medieval castle near Rome, in what is being billed as the showbiz wedding of the year.
But for now, all eyes are on their luxurious hotel in central Rome ahead of Saturday's wedding. Paparazzi and throngs of onlookers have been camping outside, but sightings of cruise and his new wife-to-be have been few and far between. Italian television broadcaster Sky Italia filmed exclusive pictures on Saturday of Tom Cruise walking inside the hotel. Cruise was with several children, two believed to be Connor and Isabella from his second marriage with Nicole Kidman. Cruise and Holmes were also spotted leaving their hotel in a mini-van on Thursday (November 16), amidst the swarm of media, fans and paparazzi.
The event is shaping up as not only the celebrity wedding of the year, but as the most famous Scientology wedding, since science-fiction writer L Ron Hubbard founded the church in Los Angeles more than 50 years ago.
Like a devout Scientologist, Tom may promise to provide Katie with "a pan, a comb, perhaps a cat."
In the old-fashioned language, that marks the traditional version, where the groom is reminded that "girls" need "clothes and food and tender happiness and frills, a pan, a comb, perhaps a cat" -- and is asked to provide them all.
The bride, in turn, is told that "young men are free and may forget" their promises.
"Well, the rings are important, and in the double ring ceremony, the minister holds them up, and, within the rings, he asks the bride and groom, as well as the congregation, to imagine small ARC triangles - which would be Affinity, Reality and Communication - within the circles of those rings, and the rings represent permanence,” explains Robert Adams of the Church of Scientology International.
And like Christian affairs, there will be flower girls, a ring, music and a party afterward.
TomKat’s very brief public appearance on Saturday came even as celebrity wedding guests and relatives of the bride and groom began arriving in Rome to attend the highest profile wedding of the year. A number of A-list guests attending the wedding have been spotted in town - Jim Carrey, Jada Pinkett Smith, Jennifer Lopez and Mission Impossible 3 director J J Abrams have all arrived in Rome, while while John Travolta, David and Victoria Beckham are all expected to attend.
