"The glamour is back,''an unseen announcer proclaimed to the crowd as the lights dimmed to start the 2008 Victoria's Secret Fashion Show. Surely she was speaking about the renovated Fontainebleau Hotel in Miami Beach, which hosted the event. The seductive lingerie line has always been about making the masses feel glamorous.
The runway show, with a pink-carpet entrance and supermodels including Adriana Lima and Alessandra Ambrosio, was the highlight of the Fontainebleau's weekend-long grand reopening festivities, and it didn't disappoint. Saturday night was packed with spectacle: raining confetti, a hot pop star (Usher), the Victoria's Secret angel wings, a $5 million diamond-encrusted bra, even fireworks in front of the hotel's famed facade.
It's not the first time the annual event has hit Miami, but was the first time it was filmed here for television. In 2004, producers gave up the TV program in lieu of a four-city Angels Across America tour to promote the Victoria's Secret brand, stopping in New York, Miami, Las Vegas and Los Angeles.
The show has always tended toward dramatic costumes, rather than the workaday bras regular women are likely to purchase at Victoria's Secret outlets. This year's designs were over the top of over the top: Vegas showgirl-style ruffles, elaborate Swarovski crystal body pieces, metallic accouterments vaguely resembling chastity belts and, of course, the company's signature angel wings. Some accessories were so heavy, rail-thin models nearly crumpled under the weight.
Touches of trends from the fall season showed up in several ensembles. Ombre patterns were seen in sheer robes, ruffles adorning models' shoulders and even one set of black and white wings worn by Lima. Jewel tones -- purple, especially -- popped up, though the shades were more muted than those fashion magazines are telling us to wear.
Heidi Klum -- whose husband Seal was sitting in the celeb-packed audience with Lenny Kravitz and Terrence Howard -- closed the affair wrapped in a giant sequined bow. It was an appropriate ending: The fashion show kicks off the holiday season for CBS on Dec. 3.
