A cook, a cricketer, a con man -- actor Shreyas Talpade says he is playing a wide range of characters to avoid getting stereotyped in Bollywood.

"It is very important to play different roles for any actor to prevent them from being stereotyped in our industry," says the 32-year-old actor.

"For newcomers like me we have to play all kind of roles to showcase our comfort in playing different characters."

Talpade made his mark in Bollywood in 2005 with a stirring performance as a deaf mute villager who aspires to join the Indian cricket team in filmmaker Nagesh Kukunoor's critically acclaimed "Iqbal".

His con man act in Kukunoor’s Dor in 2006 also earned him rave reviews. But the actor says it was his supporting role in Farah Khan’s Om Shanti Om last year that brought him in the public eye.

"I have done serious movies, comedies and now am doing a romantic film and I'm thankful that people have accepted me," he said.

In Kukunoor's Bombay to Bangkok, which released yesterday, Talpade plays an Indian cook who falls in love with a Thai masseuse in Bangkok.
