A woman claiming to be Bollywood playback singer Udit Narayan's first wife alleges the singer called her up twice last week and tried to blackmail her emotionally.

Ranjana, who has kicked up a controversy over claims that she was married to Udit Narayan, says he had made the calls after his five-hour-long closed-door talks with her on June 30 to thrash out a compromise.

"He told me that Deepa , his second wife, is very clever and she has transferred all his property in her name and he was under tremendous pressure," Ranjana told IANS. "But I told him that I only want my rights and respect as your wife, nothing more. I do not want money."

On Wednesday, the Bihar state women's commission put an embargo on the singer's foreign visits after he failed to appear before it for the sixth time in the last two months.

The commission gave Udit 15 more days to appear before it to clarify or explain his move for a compromise with Ranjana.

Ranjana, a resident of Nirmali village in Supaul district, claims she married the singer in 1984, and his present wife, Deepa Narayan, was not his legal wife.

Ranjana said she was also shocked and hurt by his referring to her as "lady", instead of Ranjana or as "wife".

"It is very unfortunate. It again exposed his double standards when he termed me as this lady. And it was just five days ago that Udit Narayan invited me for a closed-door long talk to arrive at a compromise, but he has forgotten so soon," she said.

"It hurt me deeply when a mediaperson informed me that Udit Narayan in an interview on Wednesday referred to me as 'the lady'."

Ranjana said that she did not believe in his words any more and doubted his intentions. She said she would not oppose any move by the commission to issue a production warrant against Udit.

Manju Prakash, chairperson of the commission, said the commission had decided not to allow Udit to go abroad unless he personally appears before the commission. She said that he was to visit Germany July 6-22 but would now not be allowed to leave the country.

The commission had on July 1 issued a summons notice to Udit Narayan and Ranjana to appear before it by July 5 to clarify their moves to arrive at a compromise.

The singer's lawyer told the commission that he was keen for a compromise and settlement with the woman who was claiming to be his first wife. He had reportedly approached her for this and initiated moves in this direction.

Udit Narayan has so far denied Ranjana's claim. He told the media in April that he did not know "any Ranjana Narayan", and had never married her. He alleged it was a conspiracy to defame him.

However, two days ago he had said "the lady's sister is married to my brother".
