I am at the studio where Mahima Chaudhary is doing a photo shoot for lensman Vicky Idnani. The mood is relaxed and the easy music sets the tone.

Inside the make-up room, Chaudhary is relaxing on a chair while tattoo artist Al Alva is drawing flowers across her shoulders, just below her neck.

“It’s Vicky’s idea. Permanent tattoos are interesting, but only other people. I don’t have the courage to get myself a permanent tattoo,” she says, adding: “These days you can get a tattoo that lasts about a week after which you can get a new design done. It took me an hour to get this done. And it’s painless.”

Idnani calls for a dinner break at the insistence of a hungry Chaudhary, who last ate 12 hours ago. “We did one with minimum make-up for that just-out-of-bed look. We followed that with a casual black change, another with cargos and another in Indian jewelry,” she says.

Chaudhary says shooting for Kudyon Ka Hai Zamana was very much a girly party: “Rekhaji, Vasundhara, Kim and I got along very well and had lots of fun. The bonding fit in well with the film’s story about four friends who are different from each other. After the marriage of the third, instead of consoling her, they console me about how I’ll cope with it and they all want to find the right guy for me”.

After a pause: “It’s pretty much what happens in real life. The idea of the film is that no one but you can find the right person, provided you’re open about it.” Not surprisingly, the Punjabi kudi admits to relating to the character “because a lot of times people think they can find the right person for me — something that even I haven’t been able to do yet as I’ve haven’t found the wrong ones,” she chuckles, and suggests: “Maybe somebody else should do it for me. I’ve told people, but they don’t seem to take me seriously”.

So what happened to the NRI from Florida she was reported to be seeing, I ask her. “There’s no NRI in my life and I don’t know any. I had gone to the US on a holiday with my sister and that’s about it. I’m too much in love with Mumbai to marry someone abroad and settle there with him. I’d much rather prefer a guy from Mumbai itself,” she declares adding: “I’m dating and will talk about it only when I’m sure it’s headed in the right direction.”

Apart from that, Chaudhary is “glad that Hope And A Little Sugar has been doing well at film festivals, and am now IFFI is coming up in Goa at the end of this month”.

She has another film in her kitty but says: “It’s too early to talk about that one since some important details are still being worked out,” she signs off as she disappears into the make-up room for the last change.
