With the emergence of Imran Khan and Ranbir Kapoor, the Hindi film industry need not look far for the next successor to the Khans and the Kumars at the box office. Both these youngsters have proved that they have what it takes to endear them to the audiences.
Incidentally, both newcomers are exactly two films old, with Ranbir just holding a slight edge over Imran where timing is concerned. He arrived just a little before this young Khan but that has not deterred the latter. In fact, Imran has been making rapid strides and is quite to the talk of the town with his recent performance in Sanjay Gadhvi's Kidnap The film may not have exactly created a dhoom at the box office but this young man has. He is probably one of the best things about the film. The actor has proved that he has the ability to experiment and is not afraid of taking on challenges. His first film, Jaane Tu… Ya Jaane Na, had him playing a boy next door with utter ease. But in his very next release, he switched personas dramatically. Gone was the genial, sweet boy. He donned the grab of an angst ridden youngster out to extract revenge on a man who robbed him of his childhood. His edgy, intense performance as Kabir Sharma in Kidnap has shown that he has the ability to play all kind of characters, even those with a grey streak in them with élan.
He reminds one of Aamir Khan , who, very early, in his career had acted in a film called Raakh, directed by Aditya Bhattacharya. The film didn't really do too well. But Aamir made an impact even back then as Supriya Pathak's intense, obsessive screen lover. Imran has definitely imbibed the family genes. Films are a family business with him. And such is the case with the young Ranbir too. He is the hope of the Kapoors, who can now look to revive the prestigious RK banner as they finally have a winner on their hands. He has all the pre requisites of a Hindi film hero, fair, good looks, oodles of charm and the ability to dance well. And to top it all, he is a decent actor as well. Of course, so far, Ranbir is treading the conventional route, playing the lover boy to the hilt. But he has some interesting films on hand as well.
There are directors like Raj Kumar Santoshi and Prakash Jha whose films he is working on. Imran has already revealed his ability to switch genres. It remains to be seen if Ranbir can spring a surprise or two or not. But this much is sure, with the advent of these two new youngsters, things have started hotting up. Another youngster, who has not had it so easy, is Shahid Kapur. He has worked his way up and with Jab We Met, has revealed his true potential. He is definitely the third part of this troika which may well be ruling the box office in the next couple of years to come.
