Vinayan, the Malayalee director, is best known to Tamil audiences for his hit movie Kaasi. While that film had a serious theme, Vinayan has chosen a fantasy adventure for his latest movie, Arpudha Theevu.

Based on his Malayalam hit, it is set on a remote island off the east coast of Tamil Nadu.

All the men are dwarfs but the women are of normal size. According to island legend, the men were cursed for 1000 years, and the period is due to expire.

The islanders have had no contact with the outside world and believe that fully grown men are either gods or evil spirits.

The island is in a festive mood ahead of a royal wedding between Princess Radha (Mallika Kapoor) and Gajendra (Phakru).

Then seven members of the Indian Navy are marooned on the island after their heli- copter crashes into the sea and they have to swim to safety. The first two are mistaken for evil spirits and are brutally killed by the prince and his men. The other five flee into the island’s dense forest.

Princess Radha and her confidantes are the first island inhabitants to learn that the newcomers are human beings, not evil spirits. She finds herself attracted to the handsome Aran (Prithviraj). The relationship places them at risk from the militant Gajendra and the belligerent king (Manivannan).

Arpudha Theevu is a clever blend of adventure, comedy, romance and drama, with each aspect ably presented by writer-director Vinayan. He has also ensured that his talented cast deliver precisely what is expected of them.

Prithviraj, fresh from his success in Mozhi, cuts an imposing figure, combining good looks with a memorable performance. He moves seamlessly from action and drama to comedy and romance, highlighting his versatility.

Kapoor, who has charm and good looks, is convincing as Princess Radha and shows a natural flair for comedy.

Manivannan, Phakru, Vayaapuri, Karunaas, Malayalee comedian Jagadish and Kalpana (sister of actress Oorvasi) all contribute to the film’s comedy without detracting from the main story.

Kalpana is a revelation, displaying marvellous comedic sense and perfect timing.

Jayachandhra’s background score is non- intrusive and his songs are adequate.

Arpudha Theevu is a pleasant change from the formulaic movies that have been dominant in the south. Its fresh theme and intelligent comedy make for absorbing entertainment for the whole family.
