Great movie with great values, ‘Taare Zameen Par’ deserves every bit of commercial and critical success that it should get. The positive word-of-mouth seems to be working in a big way for the Aamir Khan's directional debut venture. However, this film is an eye opener and a must watch for both parents and children, for it will change the way you look at your children and the world.
Ostensibly, the film is about children with special needs and the story revolves around the efforts of a child suffering from dyslexia to fit in, adjust and perform in a normal world where competition is the norm and regimentation the principle. Dyslexia is a specific learning disability that manifests primarily as a difficulty with written language, particularly with reading and spelling, and Aamir Khan meticulously tackles this issue in the film.
The film is well scripted and all actors have done an excellent job, though some dialogues are heavy and preachy. Emotions shown in ‘Taare Zameen Par’ are overwhelming. They seem real and often strike the right chord. So, you need to carry tissue papers in the cinema hall. Humanely covered in the film is the dilemma of dyslexic Ishaan Awasthy (Darsheel Safary)whose parents expect excellence from him in every aspect of life. When he fails to live up to their expectations, he is sent to a boarding school.
He pleads them not to send him away but his father who is too ambitious ignores him. Life in the boarding school becomes tougher for this little boy. The insensitivity of his peers, rough treatment by teachers and his parents' inability to understand his problems become intolerable for Ishaan. Ultimately, he loses interest in everything, even in his favorite hobby of painting.
At this point of time enters an unconventional art teacher Ram Kumar Nikumbh (Aamir Khan), who had experienced the same problem in his childhood, which is quite a reason to connect emotionally with Ishaan. Nikumbh helps Ishaan to overcome the trauma he has faced. Ishaan never shows his attachment to Nikumbh, but towards the end of the film emotions reach the culmination when Ishaan's painting wins him the first prize. Out of his sheer emotions, he hugs Nikumbh in a way to reveal his overwhelming gratitude.
Aamir’s matured handling of a sensitive subject brilliantly scripted by Anil Gupte leave viewers overwhelmed with tears rolling down their eyes. Darsheel is gifted child artist who demonstrates every nuance of a kid faced with such trauma, torture and humiliation. And people sitting in the cinema feel like reaching out to him and soothing him. As he always plays every character with sheer perfection, Aamir in this film also fits the bill of an art teacher.
If 'Chak De! India' revived the plaguing women's hockey in India, 'Taare Zameen Par' is definitely meant to tackle a more sensitive social issue and to sum up the year on a positive note.
