The Tamil Nadu government every year gives out subsidies to Tamil films that are made on a low budget. This year, a committee headed by Pon Baskaran, had recommended 45 and 49 films, of which the government had selected 34 and 36 films, for the years 2005 and 2006 respectively. Each of these 70 films will get Rs. 7 lakhs. In an
announcement made yesterday, the government clarified that this time films that have titles other than Tamil have been included in the subsidy list because they were made even before the tax sops proclaimed for films that have Tamil names were announced. However, in future only films with Tamil names will be considered, declares a government order.
