Chief minister Y S Rajashekar Reddy's man Friday Sureedu is now in a embarrassing situation. He has been served with summons by the Justice Venkatram Reddy commission to appear before it. . The commission is probing into the DEEPEP scam. Crores of rupees meant for the Sarva Sikhsa Abhiyan and social welfare scholarships for poor students have been siphoned away in a systematic manner.
Sarasa Devi and Subrahmanyam, a social welfare department official, are the prime accused. It is alleged that the two of them diverted the funds with active encouragement from Sureedu. Subrahmanyam has alleged that he paid an amount of one crore by way of cash to Sureedu at the chief minister's camp office.
Sureedu and Sarasa Devi are said to be very close. They both hail from the same place and know each other from childhood. The Sureedu issue was quickly covered when it came out last year as it had the potential of damaging the credibility of chief minister Y S Rajashekar Reddy. It now remains to be seen how Sureedu wriggles out of this tight spot.
