Suman, who had made his debut in a Tamil film ‘Neechal Kulam’ in 1977, has had a long wait to fulfil his dream of acting in a Malayalam film. He is now playing an important character in Hariharan’s ‘Pazhassi Raja.’ Looking back on his long career, Suman says he never planned his career. He didn’t want to be an actor in the first place; He wanted to be a pilot. He joined films because of his friends at Pachaiyappa’s College, Chennai, where he was studying B.A. Literature, asked him to give acting a try; they used to joke that he looked like a hero. He made an impression on the silver screen, especially in his action scenes, for which his fourth degree black belt in karate came in handy.
After acting in Tamil for some four years, Suman made his debut in Telugu with ‘Tharangini.’ It ran for a year and before long he established myself as an action hero in Telugu. Now, after playing Hindu gods in films such as ‘Annamayya’ and ‘Sri Satyanarana Swamy,’ He has done everything an actor could do in Telugu.” Sivaji’ marked his return to Tamil after a gap of well over two decades. Prior to that, Suman last Tamil film was Bhagyaraj’s in 1982.Suman never could get the time to do another Tamil film as he became busy in Telugu and Kannada. Then he got this offer from director Shankar to do ‘ Sivaji ’ Though he was confident that his role would get noticed, he never anticipated it would get so much appreciation.
When the audience at a function requested him to say the dialogues from ‘ Sivaji ,’ Suman knew that his role had clicked. Don’t be surprised if Suman turns a director, that too in Malayalam cinema. He would like to make a film based on Kalari payattu, the m other of all martial arts.
