Having a superstar tell you a story is a different experience altogether.

Which explains why Shah Rukh Khan has been roped in as the narrator for the movie Shaurya starring Rahul Bose, Minissha Lamba and Kay Kay Menon. Shah Rukh had earlier done the same for Khalid Mohammed’s Silsilay. Other actors who have taken up the job of narrators are Naseeruddin Shah for Paheli , Amitabh Bachchan for Jodhaa Akbar, Lagaan and Mumbai Se Aaya Mera Dost and Abhishek Bachchan for Salaam Namaste. So what does a star narrator bring to a movie?

"It adds to the commercial value of a film," says director Indrajit Lankesh, who had Salman Khan as the narrator in one of his movies. "If you have a star narrator you can cut the story short. It helps to put the pieces of a story together," he explains. He points out that Life in a... Metro had its story narrated through songs. "The inspiration came from the hit Hollywood movie, There’s Something About Mary. The concept of telling a story through songs was a good one and worked very well for the movie," he says.

Singer and actor Lucky Ali, who acted as well as narrated for the movie Kaante, says it’s all about telling the story a different way and keeping the audience interested. "I have been the sutradhar for many movies and the concept has been there for some time now," he says.

Manoj Sharma, a software engineer, says that it is interesting to have narrators like Shah Rukh Khan and Amitabh Bachchan tell the story, but it doesn’t work every time. "I couldn’t sit through Paheli as the movie was unrealistic and went on forever. Having Naseeruddin Shah narrate the story made no difference to me. If the story is bad, I don’t think even a star narrator can make a difference," he says.

Director Nagathihalli Chandrashekhar feels that a narrator should be involved in a movie only if the script demands it. "Everything depends on the script. Sometimes a strong message has to be conveyed through a script and having a superstar do it has that much more effect. There is no point in using an actor just to up the commercial value of a movie," he says.

He adds that if the script is not good, no amount of narration by a superstar will make it a success. "These actors charge a huge amount for narration. So the directors should make sure it is a sound script or all the trouble of bringing in a superstar narrator will end up being a waste," he says.
