Film stars are often known to use their celebrity for various social causes.

Raveena Tandon, Shah Rukh Khan, Karan Johar and Johnny Lever are the latest line-up from the industry, together with the Sahara Parivar and Times Foundation, to help provide shelter to 25 orphans under the supervision of Sister Martha of Helpers of Jesus Congregation that runs the orphanage Snehasagar Ashram in Vasai.

While SRK and Karan Johar donated Rs 1 lakh each, Sahara offered Rs 2 lakh and Johnny Lever Rs 5 lakh. Raveena used her good offices with SRK, Karan and the Sahara Parivar to help Sister Martha in her endeavour.

Said Sister Martha, “Thanks to this, we have a permanent, albeit small structure in Vasai. I hope to expand it in future because I have 12 more orphans to house now. I am thankful to all those people who have aided us in this project.” The cost of the project was Rs 30 lakhs. Sister Martha approached Johnny Lever personally as she knew him from the past.

The orphans were initially housed with Sister Maratha in a MHADA chawl in Andheri West. Raveena Tandon used to visit them often here, and she got into the act when she learnt that the children were being evicted by the landlord of the chawl. She housed them in her bungalow.

A source says, “These kids, between the age of 10 and 15, have been living in her bungalow since December 2005 under the supervision of Sister Martha. Now, Raveena has gone ahead and arranged a space for them in Vasai which serves as a permanent home for those kids.”

Krishna Hegde (Mumbai Congress, spokesperson) who co-ordinated the project for the orphanages, says, “Raveena is a very active social activist. However, she does not tom-tom her social activities. She prefers to keep a low profile. Some time back, she went to Priya Dutt and even got a road at Lokhandwala repaired.”
