We’ve seen you do a small little stint in Corporate How about making a special appearance in son Farhan’s films?

“Why don’t you give the suggestion to them? They have never suggested it to me and I don’t think they’ll ever take this suggestion seriously.”

The original Don had dialogues and screenplay written by you, and now your son’s re-making Don What’s your take on it?

“He narrated the script to me. He has made certain changes in it - put some twists to it which are very interesting. Don was an exceptionally interesting script without any emotionalism or syrupy sentiments. It was a caper film in the real sense of the word. A good script, a great actor like Amitabh Bachchan, along with good music by Kalyanji Anandji did the trick. But unfortunately the producer did not have technical facilities or a larger-than-life budget; the original was made in a shoe-string budget - it was shot in Juhu hotels and so on. But with the new Don , they have taken (nearly) the same script and made it on a much larger scale. The film has been shot in Malaysia and Paris. The action is shot on a grand scale vis-a-vis the original chases shot in JVPD scheme. I haven’t seen the film but Farhan seems to be very happy with it…

How would you rate Farhan as a filmmaker?

“I am very happy not only with his success, but the kind of work he has done - be it Dil Chahta Hai or Lakshya. Both are extremely well made films. Generally when sons start making films, the movies reflect some influence of their fathers, but Farhan is individualistic and his films are his own.”

What was your reaction when Farhan told you he wanted to re-make Don?

“I was amused. But it was perhaps his childhood fantasy. He was just four years old when the movie released. He has always loved that picture even as a child and used to see it quite often. So he has fulfilled a fantasy of sorts by making Don.”

Can classics be re-made?

“Yes and no. Devdas is a classic. It was made by PC Barua and then KS Saighal. And it has been done again and again 11 or 12 times in India. A film like Ten Commandments was made three times. So it depends. There are certain classics, like Gone With the Wind or Sholay that should not be made, because they have been made to perfection and there is no scope for improvement. That’s why I wonder why some people propose that Sholay should be re-made? What more can you do with it, I wonder. There is definitely scope for making Don on a much larger scale, but can one actually improve on Sholay’s action, visuals, audio or cast?”

Much is being said about the Bachchan - Shah Rukh rivalry. Will SRK live upto Amitabh’s performance in the original?

“Amitabh Bachchan is every generation’s Amitabh Bachchan and Shah Rukh is every generation’s Shah Rukh. Before Amitabh Bachchan the superstar, we had Dilip Kumar, the superstar. Amitabh did not replace Dilip Kumar. Before Dilip Kumar there was KL Saigal, Ashok Kumar. So all of them are individuals from different eras and different times have different sensibilities, different morality, different sense of aesthetics. Who is a hero? A hero is the personification of contemporary morality and contemporary aspirations. If you take these two things and personify them, that is the hero of those times. SRK is the personification of today’s generation’s morality and aspirations. Amitabh represented the youth in the 70’s and 80’s, with time different images come and to compare different images is wrong.”
