Exasperated with the frivolous lawsuits filed against film stars in different parts of the country, Shilpa Shetty tells Soumyadipta Banerjee that she’s taking the battle to court
The numerous petitions and court summons to Bollywood stars on grounds of obscenity, hurting religious sentiments are have driven them into a corner. And now Bollywood is ready to strike back. After Shah Rukh Khan, it’s Shilpa Shetty who’s trying to garner support against ‘frivolous’ lawsuits against film stars.
Shilpa perhaps has the highest number lawsuits pending against her in different courts of the country. “I have been asked numerous times abroad whether there are ready-made effigies available off-the-shelf in my country.
It’s very insulting for me as an Indian, as our country is not regressive. It feels so scary to wake up one morning and realise that there’s an arrest warrant against you in some remote corner of the country and you need to make an appearance there. It’s a nightmare. After that your family members start receiving calls….,” she says.
What really bothers Shilpa is the ease with which such cases are filed. “I have numerous cases filed against me all over. There are obscenity cases, the Richard Gere case, the Prafull Saree case…You know, I once featured in a song with Govinda where the lyrics goes like Ek Chumma Tu Mujhko Udhar De De and they went ahead and filed a case against me for that! How am I responsible for that?”
The actor admits that she had dashed off a letter to the Supreme Court of India and to the former chief justice of India, YK Sabharwal, to formulate guidelines against ‘frivolous’ cases against movie stars.
