THE BOLLYWOOD film industry has penetrated many countries around the world and the music has reached even more places than the actual movies.
Here in TT, music and films from Bollywood are very popular but it went to another level recently when scenes from the movie Dulha Mil Gaye were filmed here. For the first time in the history of Bollywood, the film makers are coming to TT to launch the music for this much anticipated film.
The playback singer in this instant is none other than Shaan. He will be accompanied by the band Jatin Lalit and ace director Lalit Pandit for the show which takes place at the Centre of Excellence, Macoya, on November 22 at 8 pm. The movie stars Sushmita Sen, Shah Rukh Khan and Fadeen Khan. It also feature the talent of TT’s own Clico Shiv Shakti Dance Company.
This is Shaan’s third visit to this country. The energetic performer, who has recorded some of the hottest tunes made in Mumbai, regularly tops music charts arouund the world. Shaan’s most popular songs include ‘Dil Wale Dulhaniya’, ‘Kuch Kuch Hota Hai’, and ‘Kabhi Khushi Khabi Gham’.
Shaan (born Shantanu Mukherjee), was a host for the popular show Sa Re Ga Ma Pa from 2000-2006 and also for Sa Re Ga Ma Pa L’il Champs. He was born into a Bengali family and is the son of the late music director Manas Mukherjee and brother of singer Sagarika. He is married to Radhika and has two sons, Soham and Shubh. He is the grandson of Jahar Mukherjee.
As a child, Shaan began his career by singing ad jingles. After giving it up for a brief period, he soon returned to it, and also began to sing remixes and cover versions. In the 1989 movie Parinda, when he was only 15 years of age, Shaan sang a single line in the song, ‘Kitni Hai Pyari Pyari Dosti Hamari’.
His career began in 1995 with his first release, the remix album called Q-funk. In 2000 he won the MTV Asia Music Award for Best Solo Album for Tanha Dil. Three years later Shaan launched his album Aksar which was hugely successful. The album contained international stars such as ‘Blue’, ‘Mel C’ and ‘Samira Said’.
Apart from his albums, Shaan has sung playback vocals for various Bollywood films, including Pyaar Mein Kabhi Kabhi, Bas Itna Sa Khwab Hai, Lakshya, Dil Chahta Hai, Kal Ho Na Ho, Hum Tum, Dhoom, Dus, Salaam Namaste, Fight Club, Don – The Chase Begins Again, Fanaa, Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna, and Om Shanti Om
Shaan is now the host of another very popular music show, Star Voice of India (SVOI), which airs on Star Plus. Along with singing, Shaan has also acted in the movie, Daman, also starring Raveena Tandon. He has made appearances in his songs in the movies, Zameen and Hungama.
