Bollywood is taking yet another look at the institution of marriage.

The Hindi film industry seems to be besotted with the idea of marriage. A slew of films have been made in the recent past showing various facets of this complex relationship. While films like No Entry and Masti showcase the comical side of marriage, there are films like Mixed Doubles, Bewafaa, Murder and Kabhi Alvida Na Kehnaa which portray the darker side of this institution. Some recently released and yet to be released films have also touched upon this subject. Just what is it about this subject which makes it so interesting for Bollywood scriptwriters and directors?

Writer-director Reema Kagti's latest film deals with the lives of six couples out on a honeymoon and their relationships. As to why she chose this topic, Kagti says, "Marriage is an age-old institution which forms the basis of our lives and the society at large. It is a very important part of our lives and is bound to be chosen as a subject by a medium which is dependant for ideas stemming from the society. And also because our films are all about human emotions which are very well reflected in a marriage. That is probably the reason why we directors are choosing this subject so often nowadays."

A thought which director Meghna Gulzar agrees with. Both her films have stories about married couples. One of them, Filhaal, which showed a couple's problems regarding having an offspring. Her second film depicts the confusion and anxiety of a couple who had an arranged marriage. On why she chose this subject Meghna says, "Marriage itself is a very interesting subject. Nearly all our films talk of love marriages, whereas in spite of arranged marriages being so prevalent in our country, they are given a royal ignore by Bollywood. That is why I chose this subject for my film. I find tremendous potential in this subject and am very fascinated by it."

In his recent film, writer- director Anand Kumar, tries to portray how professional rivalry comes between a couple's relationship. Anand agrees that although there have been quite a few films made on marriage, but each of them has dealt with a different issue. "I chose this subject because I feel very strongly about this relationship. It forms such an intrinsic part of our lives, yet the values and ideas are changing. The perception of marriage for young couples is changing. They don't have the time to give to each other and marriages are breaking very easily. Being a filmmaker, I think it is my moral responsibility to uphold the values of this relationship through my film and that is why I chose this subject. The idea is to teach my audience the importance of marriage and having a partner. That is why I fail to understand films like KANK, which appear to have a very confused story-line."

Leena Yadav, whose film Shabd created quite a rage with its off-beat plot, also thinks that being a very complex relationship marriage is a very interesting subject to portray in films. "It is one relationship which encompasses all the emotions - be it love, hatred, compassion or sex. All the emotions can be very well researched and presented in this singular relationship. That is why I chose a subject like a post-marital relationship between a couple in my film."

So, that explains it.
