Bollywood star Saif Ali Khan, who was admitted to hospital on Sunday after complaining of chest pain, "smokes a lot" and should stop, according to his mother and former actor Sharmila Tagore. Khan, who has acted in around 40 movies, is out of danger. He was rushed to hospital in Mumbai late on Sunday with media reports saying he had over-exerted himself by working too hard.

Tagore, currently the head of India's film censor board, told The Times of India newspaper she thinks her son's smoking, along with his busy schedule, led to his hospitalisation.

"He smokes a lot and has to stop now," Tagore was quoted in the newspaper as saying on Wednesday. "I am sure the doctors will tell him so."

In the past few years, 36-year-old Khan has received rave reviews for his acting as an intense hero in films like "Omkara" and "Parineeta".

"Omkara" is the Bollywood version of William Shakespeare's Othello while "Parineeta" is a period film set in Calcutta.

Khan's latest film is Eklavya, where he plays the role of a prince dealing with palace intrigue. It was released on Friday. Khan stars with Bollywood icon Amitabh Bachchan in the movie.

Tagore, wife of former Indian cricket captain Mansur Ali Khan Pataudi, says her son needs to look after his health better.

"Saif's father has it (chest pain) and his grandfather too suffered from it," she said. "I hope Saif understands the repercussions and takes care now."
