His social initiatives definitely get more news coverage than his movies. However, that doesn’t mean his acting skills go unnoticed, at least not among the international movie buffs. While Time magazine may have given Rahul Bose the recognition as ‘the superstar of Indian art house cinema’, a South Asian Arts festival ‘Masala!Mehndi!Masti!’ in Toronto has a retrospective planned of the actor this year.
“I have two kinds of reactions. Firstly, I was flattered by the recognition that I was receiving, complimenting me on the various genres of cinema that I have been associated with. Secondly, it was bit strange to get a retrospective at 39, which means it’s a warning that at the most I have five more years to go before I retire!” says Rahul laughing.
The two day festival being held on July 27 to July 29 will showcase movies like ‘Pyaar Ke Side Effects’, ‘Split Wide Open’ and ‘Mr and Mrs Iyer’. Also it will have a workshop with the actor, along with an intensive discussion with Hollywood film critic Cameron Bailey on Rahul’s works.
The fact that most of the recognition comes from outside one’s native country may seem ironic, but Rahul says he isn’t miffed. “No matter where the appreciation and recognition comes from, an artist is always open to it. Our country is bent towards mainstream commercial cinema, which I feel is perfectly okay. Alternative cinema is not the priority of this country, and I am not bitter about it,” clears Rahul.
Though he has experimented with all forms of cinema and is eager to have a brush with an action flick, his latest movie ‘Chain Kulii Ki Main Kulii’ failed to woo the box office altogether - inspite of aiming to take advantage of the dearth of children-oriented movies.
“The movie flopped, courtesy an obvious marketing error. The movie released just before the schools began, that gave it only the weekend to garner the box office collections. Having said that, I also think my performance wasn’t up to the mark,” explains Rahul.
Moving ahead, he claims to have his hands full with his rugby championship matches and also his upcoming movies like ‘Before the Rains’, ‘Anuranan’ and Japanese Wife’. “Directed by Aparna Sen, I feel ‘Japanese Wife’ has the most brilliant and touching script I have ever come across. It’s just fabulous,” he smiles.
