The state government is launching the sensitive and vote gathering popular scheme ‘ 2 rupees a kilo rice scheme’ from tomorrow. The late NT Rama Rao stared the scheme way back in 1983 after riding to power. Chandra Babu Naidu slowly watered down the scheme and finally scrapped it.
Babu tried to make it a poll promise for the next assembly elections. YS got wind of it and he promptly hijacked it. He announced that the congress government would introduce the scheme much before the elections.
The scheme is now set for take off tomorrow. But opposition parties in the state are up in arms against the government. Their ire is directed at the instructions given to the fair price dealers. They have all been strictly instructed to display big photographs of Indira Gandhi and YS Rajashekar Reddy. People are wondering if they are actually fair price shops or congress party offices!
